Catches like this can be a massive win toward slowing the spread of a problematic invasive species.

A contracted hunter working deep in the swamps of Big Cypress National Preserve has helped capture one of the largest Burmese pythons ever recorded in the state, wildlife officials confirmed Tuesday.

The invasive snakes are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for up to 30 minutes. Pythons may increasingly be found in residential backyards and urban areas adjacent to these waterways.
