Ice damming doesn’t start at the roof edge. It starts inside the house. Warm air escapes into the attic, melts the snow above, then that water refreezes at the cold eaves. Now the meltwater has nowhere to go. So it backs up under the shingles and leaks into the attic. The roof gets blamed. But insulation, air sealing, and ventilation are usually the real issue. Fix the heat movement and the problem disappears. Ignore it, and leaks are only a matter of time.
